January 2025 Credit Card Processing Rate Changes

2025 begins with an early set of rate changes.

Every year in April and October, the card brands update processing rates and rules. Sometimes, rate changes occur at other times of the year as well. Below is a summary of changes going into effect in January 2025.

Visa

Fee Changes

Visa Misuse Fee − US

Effective January 1, 2025, Visa increased the Misuse of Authorization Fee from $0.09 to $0.15 for each non-compliant transaction for which Merchants do not clear or reverse the transaction within the required timeframe.

Visa BASE II System File Fee − US

Effective January 1, 2025, Visa increased the BASE II System File Fee from $0.0018 to $0.0025. This Fee is assessed per transaction and applies to each BASE II Clearing and Settlement processing.

Visa Digital Commerce Service Fee − US

Effective January 1, 2025, the Visa Digital Commerce Service Fee will no longer be billed based on settled volume, it will be billed based on authorized volume. There will be no change to the rates assessed.

Mastercard

Fee Changes

Mastercard TPE Excessive Authorization Attempts Fee – US

Effective January 1, 2025, Mastercard increased the TPE Excessive Authorization Attempts Fee from $0.30 to $0.50. The fee applies to each declined authorization after 10 previously declined attempts have been made on the same card number at the same merchant location in a 24-hour period, or 35 previously declined attempts have been made in a rolling 30-day period.
