Gateway Fee

Fees charged by payment gateways for providing the technology infrastructure that securely captures, encrypts, and transmits payment card data between e-commerce sites or point-of-sale systems and payment processors.

Gateway fees typically consist of multiple components including a monthly service fee ranging from $10 to $50, per-transaction fees of $0.05 to $0.30, and sometimes setup or integration fees for initial implementation. The specific fee structure varies by gateway provider and service level. For example, Authorize.net charges a monthly gateway fee plus per-transaction fees, while some payment facilitators like Stripe bundle gateway functionality into their overall processing rates without separate gateway charges.

The monthly gateway fee covers access to the gateway's infrastructure including secure data transmission, PCI-compliant data handling, API access for integration, virtual terminal for manual entry, reporting and analytics tools, and customer support. Per-transaction fees compensate the gateway for processing each individual transaction through their system. Some gateways offer tiered pricing with different monthly fees based on transaction volume or feature sets, while others charge flat rates regardless of volume.

Merchants should evaluate gateway fees in the context of their overall processing costs and business needs. Key considerations include whether the gateway integrates with existing e-commerce platforms or accounting systems, whether advanced features like tokenization, recurring billing, or fraud tools are included or cost extra, whether the gateway is processor-agnostic (allowing merchant to switch processors without changing gateways), what level of technical support is provided, and whether per-transaction gateway fees are competitive. Some businesses benefit from standalone gateways that offer flexibility and advanced features, while others prefer bundled solutions from payment facilitators that include gateway functionality in simplified all-in-one pricing.
