3D Secure
An authentication protocol for online card transactions that adds an additional verification layer between the cardholder and issuing bank, shifting fraud liability from merchants to card issuers when properly implemented.
3D Secure (3DS) was developed by card networks to reduce online fraud by verifying cardholder identity during checkout. The protocol creates a three-domain model involving the merchant's acquiring bank (domain 1), the card network's infrastructure (domain 2), and the cardholder's issuing bank (domain 3). When 3DS is enabled, the issuing bank authenticates the cardholder during checkout, typically through a password, biometric verification, or one-time code sent to their mobile device. Successful authentication shifts liability for fraudulent transactions from the merchant to the issuing bank.
The original 3D Secure protocol, launched in the early 2000s with brand-specific names Visa Secure (formerly Verified by Visa) and Mastercard Identity Check (formerly Mastercard SecureCode), suffered from poor user experience due to redirect pages and authentication friction that caused significant cart abandonment. 3D Secure 2.0, introduced in 2016 and widely adopted by 2021, significantly improved the experience through frictionless authentication that uses risk-based analysis to authenticate low-risk transactions in the background without customer interaction, mobile-optimized interfaces, biometric authentication options, and data sharing that allows issuers to make better risk decisions.
Card networks incentivize 3DS adoption by offering lower interchange rates for authenticated transactions and providing strong customer authentication (SCA) compliance required in regions like Europe under PSD2 regulations. Merchants implementing 3DS must balance fraud reduction benefits and liability shifts against potential conversion rate impacts, though 3DS 2.0's frictionless flow has largely mitigated earlier concerns about checkout abandonment.
