Commercial Card

Credit or purchasing cards issued to businesses, government entities, or organizations rather than individual consumers, typically carrying higher interchange rates but offering enhanced data tracking and reporting capabilities.

Commercial cards encompass business credit cards, corporate cards, purchasing cards (P-Cards), and government cards used by organizations to manage business expenses and procurement. These cards carry higher standard interchange rates than consumer cards, typically ranging from 2.30% + $0.10 to 3.25% + $0.10 depending on card type and network. However, when merchants properly process commercial card transactions with Level 2 or Level 3 data, these transactions can qualify for substantially reduced interchange rates.

Commercial cards offer businesses enhanced controls and reporting not available with consumer cards, including detailed transaction data for expense management and accounting, spending limits and category restrictions for individual cardholders, consolidated billing for all company cardholders, integration with expense management and accounting systems, and fraud protection with expanded liability coverage for business purchases.

For merchants accepting commercial cards, proper transaction processing is critical to minimize costs. Simply processing a commercial card like a consumer card results in the highest interchange rates. Merchants should implement systems capable of capturing and submitting Level 2 data (tax amount, customer code) at minimum, and Level 3 data (line-item details) for optimal rates on commercial transactions. The interchange savings from proper commercial card processing can be substantial—a transaction that would cost 3.15% + $0.10 at standard commercial rates might qualify at 1.90% + $0.10 with complete Level 3 data. B2B merchants, government contractors, and businesses serving commercial customers should prioritize Level 2 and Level 3 data capabilities when selecting payment processors and gateways.
