Chargeback Alert

An early warning notification service that informs merchants when a cardholder initiates a dispute inquiry with their issuing bank, providing an opportunity to resolve the issue or issue a refund before it escalates to a formal chargeback.

Chargeback alert services operate through networks that connect issuing banks with merchants, providing near-real-time notifications when cardholders contact their banks about disputed transactions. The two primary alert networks are Verifi (owned by Visa, offering Cardholder Dispute Resolution Network alerts) and Ethoca (owned by Mastercard, offering Ethoca Alerts). When a cardholder initiates a dispute inquiry at their bank, participating issuers send an alert through these networks to enrolled merchants, typically providing 24-72 hours to respond before the dispute becomes a formal chargeback.

Upon receiving an alert, merchants can choose to immediately issue a refund to prevent the chargeback, accept the coming chargeback and prepare representment evidence, or contact the customer directly to resolve the misunderstanding. Issuing a refund through the alert system prevents the dispute from becoming a chargeback, which avoids chargeback fees, prevents the chargeback from counting toward the merchant's chargeback ratio, and eliminates the time and effort required for chargeback representment.

Chargeback alert services charge per-alert fees typically ranging from $15 to $40, comparable to chargeback fees but with the advantage of preventing ratio increases. These services are particularly valuable for merchants operating near card network chargeback thresholds, businesses with high-value transactions where chargeback prevention justifies the alert cost, and industries prone to friendly fraud where customer confusion causes disputes. However, alert coverage is incomplete as not all issuing banks participate in these networks, and merchants must weigh per-alert costs against their chargeback rates to determine cost-effectiveness.
